About this position

The Department of Forensic Sciences at The George Washington University is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate to support and expand the Forensic Molecular Biology Research Program in Washington, DC. The program applies molecular biology, genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics to forensic science and human identification, with the goal of improving the efficiency, accuracy, and informativeness of forensic genetic analyses and addressing challenging biological evidence.

Research in Dr. Daniele Podini’s laboratory includes the development and evaluation of single nucleotide polymorphism and microhaplotype assays for human identification, recovery and analysis of nuclear DNA from rootless hair shafts, capture hybridization, DNA repair, forensic applications of Massively Parallel Sequencing, and bioinformatic workflows for complex forensic genomic data.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct independent and collaborative research in forensic molecular biology, forensic genetics, and human genomics. The work combines laboratory-based molecular biology with computational genomic analysis, including the design and validation of molecular and genomic assays and the development, implementation, optimization, and evaluation of workflows for sequence processing, variant identification, genotyping, quality assessment, and interpretation of MPS data.

The researcher will work closely with Dr. Podini, graduate students, collaborators, and members of the Department of Forensic Sciences. Responsibilities also include mentoring master’s students undertaking independent research projects, contributing to manuscripts and scientific presentations, participating in grant development, supporting laboratory operations and quality practices, and collaborating with academic, government, and forensic science partners. The research environment is connected to the university’s Master of Science in Forensic Science program and its broad portfolio of applied forensic science collaborations.
