About this position

Harvard University’s Black Hole Initiative (BHI), affiliated with the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, is inviting applications for Postdoctoral Research Fellows in Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States.

The BHI is an interdisciplinary research center focused on the study of black holes, bringing together researchers in physics, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy, and the history of science. Current senior members include Harvard faculty and collaborators from Yale, MIT, and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. Research themes mentioned in the call include fundamental physics of black holes and the information paradox, mathematical stability of spacetime and gravitational memory, GR magnetohydrodynamic simulations of accretion flows, tidal disruption events, gravitational waves and black hole mergers, the philosophical and historical context of black holes, and horizon-resolving observations and analysis using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

The fellowship is grant-funded for three years, contingent on performance and funding. The selected fellow will have access to computing facilities and research support, including publication charges, conference travel, and computing resources. The salary range listed is $70,000–80,000.

Applicants must have completed the Ph.D. before starting the fellowship. The application requires a CV, three letters of reference, and a research proposal; publication lists are optional. The preferred start date is September 1, 2027. The application deadline is 2026-11-16, though applications may be considered on an ongoing basis until the positions are filled.
