About this position
The University of Arizona’s Steward Observatory invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral fellowship in dusty inner regions of active galactic nuclei (AGN) interferometric imaging. Based in Tucson, Arizona, the fellow will investigate the structure of AGN using infrared and Fizeau interferometric imaging from the Large Binocular Telescope.
The research will focus on interpreting recently acquired and ongoing mid-infrared interferometric observations that resolve dusty regions traditionally described as an AGN torus, as well as associated outflows and shocks. The successful candidate may develop modeling, observation, and data-reduction techniques and will work with Steve Ertel, Xiaohui Fan, and Richard Green. Researchers with strong backgrounds in related astrophysics will also be considered.
The fellow will lead an independent research agenda, publish and present results, contribute to public engagement, and collaborate with faculty and scholars. Opportunities include developing research collaborations and grant proposals, mentoring students, and using University of Arizona computational resources, including the GPU cluster. Steward Observatory provides access to major observing and computational facilities and a large postdoctoral community.
Applicants must have completed a Ph.D. in Astronomy, Physics, Astrophysics, or a related science by the time of hire. Preferred experience includes interferometric imaging and modeling of dust, shocks, or outflows in AGN. Start dates range from February to July 2027, with a target hire date of May 1, 2027. Applications will begin review on December 15, 2026, and the position remains open until filled.
Submit a two-page CV, a cover letter with contact details for three references, a three-page research statement, and a list of publications through the University of Arizona application portal. The position is full-time and benefits eligible, with salary based on NIH guidelines and experience.
