About this position
Duke University’s Department of History is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in Care Studies and Scholarly Publishing for an in-person fellowship based in Durham, North Carolina. The position is designed for a recent PhD whose work engages some aspect of care studies and who wants to build experience in open-access scholarly publishing and scholarly communication.
The fellow will split their time across three intertwined areas of work. A substantial part of the role supports RCGE’s scholarly digital projects, including the development of its digital community, workshops that help authors prepare articles for publication, and broader outreach activities such as the blog Care Talk, a directory of researchers, newsletters, teaching resources, and assessment of digital impact. Another major component is serving as managing editor for Care in Common, a peer-reviewed open-access journal launching through a pilot program with Duke University Libraries. In that role, the fellow will handle editorial screening, reviewer coordination, workflow management in Scholastica, copyediting, production handoff, metadata preparation, and documentation of processes for the pilot program.
The fellowship also protects time for the fellow’s own research and writing, with projects expected to connect to the broad field of care studies. The successful candidate will present work in progress to the RCGE Working Papers Seminar and contribute a blog post based on that work. The advert emphasizes structured training, mentorship, and direct experience helping launch a new publishing program with Duke University Libraries and Duke University Press.
This is a research-adjacent, professionally oriented postdoctoral fellowship that combines digital scholarship, journal operations, and ongoing scholarly development in the area of care studies.
