About this position
Ghent University is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Fellow in formal semantics, pragmatics, information structure, and language change in the Department of Linguistics. The position is part of the ERC-funded CAUSALITY project, which investigates the causes of language change and conservativity through formal theoretical modeling, artificial-agent simulations, and empirical evidence from historical treebanks of West Germanic languages.
The postdoctoral researcher will model information-structure-related phenomena from a diachronic perspective in Germanic and Romance languages. Potential topics include pragmatic effects of syntactic movement and the semantics and pragmatics of pronouns, determiners, and quantifiers. The exact research focus will be tailored to the candidate's background and discussed during the interview and hiring process.
Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate in theoretical or computational linguistics, demonstrate strong expertise in formal semantics and pragmatics through publications, and have experience with statistical analysis of linguistic data. An interest in language variation and change is expected. Experience with Game Theory for modeling natural language use is advantageous but not essential.
The position starts in February 2027 and is offered for at least 12 months, with the possibility of a one-year extension after positive evaluation. The grant is equivalent to the net salary of a doctoral assistant at the same education and seniority level, adjusted for family situation; a higher level may be assigned based on experience and competencies. Ghent University also provides staff benefits including professional training, 36 days of annual leave, bicycle allowance, and eco vouchers.
Applications must include a CV, PhD transcripts, a letter of interest, and two publications. Two reference letters must be sent directly by referees. Submit the application to Alexandra Simonenko by 15 December 2026 at 23:59.
