About this position
The University of Hong Kong invites applications for a Postdoctoral Fellow in LNP-Assisted Gene Editing for Neurodegeneration in the JC STEM Lab of Nanomedicine for Advanced Therapy, Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacy, led by Professor Khuloud Al-Jamal.
The project develops lipid nanoparticle (LNP)-based CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing platforms for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The postdoctoral fellow will design and evaluate single and dual gene-knockout strategies, formulate and optimise LNPs for nucleic-acid delivery, conduct in vivo disease-model studies, and assess therapeutic efficacy through behavioural, phenotypic, molecular, and immunohistochemical analyses.
Research activities include CRISPR guide-RNA design and validation, LNP characterisation, animal experiments, motor-neuron cell culture, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, transcriptomic studies, and computational modelling of molecular interactions. The fellow will also contribute to manuscripts, grant applications, reports, protocols, international collaborations, student supervision, and conference presentations.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in molecular biology, biochemistry, pharmacology, neuroscience, bioengineering, or a related discipline. Strong experience in gene editing or nanoparticle therapeutics is required, with LNP formulation and nucleic-acid encapsulation experience essential. Knowledge of neurodegenerative disease biology and excellent English communication, research, collaboration, and data-management skills are expected.
The appointment is full-time for one year, renewable subject to funding and project progress. A competitive salary, annual leave, medical benefits, and access to campus gyms and libraries are offered. Apply online with an up-to-date CV. Applications close on 31 January 2027, or earlier if the position is filled.

What's required
A Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Neuroscience, Bioengineering, or a related field is required. Applicants should have strong biological skills and a proven research track record in gene editing or nanoparticle-based therapeutics, hands-on CRISPR-Cas gene-editing expertise including guide RNA design and editing validation, and experience with lipid nanoparticle formulation, characterisation, and nucleic-acid payload encapsulation. Familiarity with neurodegenerative disease biology, including neuroinflammation, microglial activation, and neuroprotection, is expected. Experience with in vivo experiments and behavioural studies is advantageous. Expertise in western blotting, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, and molecular biology is required or strongly preferred. Applicants must demonstrate scientific writing and publication experience, excellent written and spoken English, IT and data-management skills, problem-solving ability, independence, teamwork, student supervision capability, and the ability to contribute to grant writing and funding applications.
How to apply
Apply online through the University of Hong Kong application portal and upload an up-to-date CV. Applications are reviewed from 12 October 2026 until 31 January 2027 or until the post is filled, whichever is earlier.
