About this position
National Research Council Canada is recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Microbial Community Engineering at its Clean Energy Innovation unit in Royalmount, Montréal, Canada.
The project, Engineering resilient synthetic microbial consortia for high efficiency ethanol production from syngas, aims to develop stable microbial communities that convert syngas into ethanol more efficiently than conventional monoculture systems. Research will include isolating and adapting syngas-tolerant microbial strains, designing consortia with complementary metabolic functions, and evaluating performance in laboratory-scale bioreactors.
The successful fellow will lead the design, construction, and experimental evaluation of synthetic microbial consortia within a multidisciplinary research team. The opportunity is particularly relevant to candidates in microbiology, microbial ecology, molecular biology, bioinformatics, environmental biology, metabolic modeling, microbiome engineering, and sustainable fuel biotechnology.
Applicants need a relevant Ph.D. obtained within the past three years or expected within six months of appointment. Experience integrating genomic or metagenomic data is essential; experience with metabolic modeling, bioinformatics, microbiome engineering, or R/Python programming is advantageous. English or French is required.
This is a two-year term appointment with a salary of $83,985–$116,641, benefits, and a travel fund. Applications should include a resume, one-page statement of interest, Ph.D. transcript, and publication list. The closing date is January 7, 2026, at 23:59 Eastern Time.
