About this position
Stanford University is inviting applications for a paid postdoctoral fellowship in the Schreiber Lab, based in Stanford, California. The project investigates individual differences in pain and recovery after surgery, with a focus on the transition from acute to chronic postsurgical pain.
The fellow will connect quantitative research with clinically meaningful questions about pain vulnerability, recovery trajectories, preventive interventions, and personalized perioperative care. Research may involve longitudinal modeling of pain and function, patient-reported outcomes, quantitative sensory testing, inflammatory biomarkers, symptom diaries, electronic health records, and long-term clinical follow-up.
Potential projects include identifying pain-vulnerability phenotypes; developing and validating prediction models; examining inflammatory and psychosocial mechanisms; studying differences in treatment benefit; translating detailed phenotyping into clinical pathways; and testing preventive analgesic, behavioral, pharmacologic, procedural, nutritional, physical, cognitive, and sleep-related strategies.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop research questions, conduct analyses, lead manuscripts, present at scientific meetings, build reproducible workflows, collaborate with clinical and quantitative investigators, and contribute to studies and funding proposals. Mentorship will be provided by Professor Kristin L. Schreiber, with complementary guidance in data science and immunology.
Applicants need a doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, quantitative psychology, biostatistics, data science, computational biology, or a related field by the start date, research experience using statistical or computational methods, and proficiency in SPSS, R, Python, or comparable software. Strong writing, communication, and collaboration skills are required. Prior pain-research experience is not essential.
The initial appointment is for one year, renewable for one to two additional years. The expected base salary is $79,056–$85,000. Submit a cover letter, CV, representative publication or writing sample, and contact details for three references to [email protected]. Review begins November 1, 2026, and continues until the position is filled.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in neuroscience, psychology, quantitative psychology, biostatistics, data science, computational biology, or a related field by the appointment start date. Demonstrated experience applying statistical or computational methods to research data and proficiency in SPSS, R, Python, or comparable analytical software are required, along with strong scientific writing, communication, and collaboration skills and an interest in pain research, individual differences in pain physiology, and implementation research. Preferred experience includes behavioral interventions; participant recruitment; observational or interventional studies; longitudinal, multilevel, predictive, regression, clustering, latent-variable, trajectory, mediation, moderation, causal-inference, model-validation, or missing-data methods; and integration of patient-reported outcomes, biomarkers, or electronic health-record data. Prior pain-research experience is welcome but not required.
How to apply
Submit a cover letter describing your research interests, quantitative experience, and fit, a curriculum vitae, one representative publication or research writing sample, and names and contact information for three references. Email all materials to [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed beginning November 1, 2026, and continue until the position is filled.
