About this position
Umeå University’s Department of Physics is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to work in attosecond physics within the Relativistic Attosecond Physics Laboratory (REAL). The project is centered on the generation, characterization, and application of intense isolated attosecond pulses in the XUV and X-ray range.
The research environment combines advanced laser development with experimental ultrafast science. The laboratory works with Light Wave Synthesizer 100 (LWS100), described as a world-unique optical parametric synthesizer system with 4.5 fs pulse duration, 100 TW peak power, and carrier-envelope phase stabilization. In addition, experimental beamlines are available for producing intense attosecond pulses through gas or plasma media, together with detectors and tools for characterizing XUV and X-ray radiation.
The successful candidate will contribute to ongoing projects on high-harmonic generation (HHG) at the attosecond scale and relativistic laser-plasma physics. The post is strongly experimental in nature and offers the opportunity to work with sophisticated ultrafast laser infrastructure and attosecond pulse sources in a dedicated research laboratory.
The position is based at Umeå University and is connected to the research group around REAL and Prof. Laszlo Veisz.

What's required
A PhD or an equivalent foreign degree recognized as comparable to a PhD is required by the time the appointment decision is made. Preference is given to applicants who earned the degree no more than three years ago, unless special reasons apply. Prior experience and competence in at least one of the following areas are required: operation and application of high-power laser or OPCPA systems, operation and application of few-cycle laser systems, experimental attosecond physics and HHG, or laser-plasma experiments. The applicant must have good spoken and written English. Motivation, responsibility, goal orientation, and strong ability to handle mainly experimental tasks both independently and in a research group are expected. Experience with simulations and theory in the relevant areas, supervision of bachelor’s and master’s students, preparing data for publication, and writing manuscripts are considered merits.
How to apply
Prepare a complete application in English or Swedish with a cover letter, CV and publication list, proof of PhD or expected completion, additional degree certificates and transcripts, thesis and up to three relevant papers, other supporting documents, and contact details for two referees. Submit the application through the university’s electronic recruitment system via the application button on the advert page.
