About this position
Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon is inviting applications for a full-time postdoctoral position in automated high-throughput screening of electrolyte additives for aqueous batteries. The position is based in Geesthacht, Germany, within the Institute of Surface Science.
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to an international project developing safer, more sustainable, and cost-effective stationary energy-storage technologies. The research will combine robotic electrolyte preparation, automated electrochemical testing, extensive electrochemical characterization, and machine-learning-assisted data analysis.
Responsibilities include developing reproducible high-throughput workflows, screening electrolyte additives, generating datasets linking electrolyte composition to battery performance, and applying galvanostatic cycling, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The researcher will also contribute to quantitative structure-property relationship and machine-learning models, publish results, present at conferences, and collaborate with researchers, data scientists, and industrial partners.
Applicants need a PhD in materials science, electrochemistry, chemical engineering, energy engineering, or a related field. Strong electrochemistry and aqueous-battery expertise, laboratory experience, electrochemical data-analysis skills, and very good English are required. Experience with electrolyte development, metal-anode batteries, materials characterization, automation, robotics, data science, or machine learning is desirable.
The appointment is an 18-month fixed-term contract, starting in February 2027, with 39 hours per week and remuneration up to EG 13 under the German public-service agreement. Additional benefits include research and conference funding, six weeks of holiday, social benefits, flexible-work options, and access to advanced robotic laboratories and international research networks. The application deadline is 29 December 2026.
