About this position

Postdoctoral position in geophysical characterization of ancient Roman mole structures at the University of Lausanne (Institute of Earth Sciences, Faculty of Geosciences and Environment).

The TRANS-PORTUS project is an international and transdisciplinary research effort focused on reconstructing the trajectories of ancient Roman harbours by combining archaeology, harbour deposits, and urban/environmental context. The postdoctoral researcher will work on the characterization of mole structures, with fieldwork primarily at Portus near Rome and also at Civitavecchia.

Research activities include geophysical logging, surface-to-borehole geophysics, high-resolution seismic reflection, and ground-penetrating radar. The role also involves processing and analysing geophysical data using standard and innovative approaches, with results published in applied geophysics and archaeo-geophysical journals, and broader implications integrated into maritime archaeology publications.

Applicants should hold a PhD in geophysics or a related field and have strong skills in fieldwork, modelling, and inversion. Experience with high-resolution seismic reflection or GPR is an advantage. Strong English communication skills are expected; Italian or French is a plus. A valid driving licence for Switzerland and Italy is essential, and occasional night/weekend fieldwork may be required.

The position is a 100% research appointment for 1 year, renewable for 1 additional year. Start date is 01.09.2026 or by agreement. Deadline to apply is 2026-06-01. Apply via the linked website with a cover letter, CV, diplomas, and three referees.
