About this position
Nagasaki Prefectural University in Nagasaki, Japan, invites applications for one full-time Project Research Fellow equivalent to a postdoctoral researcher. The fellow will contribute to the research project Between “Prediction” and “Reality”: The Effectiveness and Challenges of Mathematical Models in the COVID-19 Response, conducted under the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research on Academic Transformation Areas (A), “Creation of Infectious Disease Anthropology and Recommendations for the Next Pandemic.”
The interdisciplinary project examines how mathematical models informed COVID-19 response decisions. Responsibilities include reproducing and verifying infection-spread and containment processes in small areas, collecting and organizing pandemic-response records, investigating administrative archives, conducting interviews with government officials, comparing model predictions with actual infection trends, and evaluating the effectiveness and limitations of model-based decision-making. The fellow will also write research papers, present findings at conferences, prepare reports, manage workshops and seminars, and coordinate research collaboration across institutions.
The position is assigned to the Department of Public Health, Faculty of Nursing and Nutrition. Applicants should hold a doctorate in a relevant field or expect to obtain one within the current fiscal year. They must be capable of advancing mathematical-model research on infectious-disease dynamics, communicate and prepare documents in Japanese, and participate in multi-institutional collaborative research. Practical experience with qualitative research is not required, and training or support will be provided.
The appointment is full-time and fixed-term, beginning in early January 2027 or on another mutually agreed date, with annual renewal possible through March 31, 2031. Salary is ¥270,000–¥300,000 per month, with an annual income of approximately ¥3–5 million and a year-end bonus of 2.525 months’ salary. Benefits include commuting support and applicable insurance coverage.
Applications must arrive between October 30 and November 25, 2026. Submit a CV, research-achievements record with major publications, and the required education certificate by registered mail to Nagasaki Prefectural University’s Siebold Campus. Further details are available at the university recruitment page.
