About this position
King’s College London is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate for the EPSRC-funded 3D-Metamaterial Hub for Sustainability. The position is based in the Photonics & Nanotechnology group in the Department of Physics at the Strand Campus, led by Professor Anatoly Zayats.
The research will investigate the fabrication and experimental validation of the linear and nonlinear optical properties of three-dimensional metamaterials and two-dimensional metasurfaces. The work will focus on plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures, their nonlinear optical responses, and molecular interactions with metamaterials.
The successful researcher will design and carry out experiments examining how nonlinear and ultrafast processes influence light–matter interactions in complex engineered systems. A particular emphasis will be placed on molecular interactions with metamaterials, supported by experimental studies of advanced photonic structures.
The role provides an interdisciplinary research environment with collaboration across academic and industry partners in the MetaHub consortium. The researcher will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, opportunities to take ownership of research directions, and scope to develop technical, project-management and leadership expertise in photonics and metamaterials.
The project sits within a growing Physics Department with substantial investment in research infrastructure and laboratory space, offering an environment for high-impact research in photonics, nanotechnology and optical materials.

What's required
A PhD in a relevant subject area is required, although candidates who have submitted their thesis and are awaiting award may be considered. Candidates should have experience investigating the linear and nonlinear optical properties of three-dimensional metamaterials and two-dimensional metasurfaces based on plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures, including their interactions with molecules and related ultrafast optical processes. Clear oral and written communication, teamwork, strong presentation and communication skills, and good attention to detail are essential. Experience with epsilon near-zero media, magneto-optical measurements, and numerical modelling of metamaterials is desirable. Applicants must submit a CV and supporting statement addressing the essential criteria and, where possible, the desirable criteria.
How to apply
Apply online through the King’s College London recruitment portal. Submit a CV and supporting statement explaining how you meet the essential criteria and, where possible, the desirable criteria. Apply by 8 November 2026; the advert may close early.
