About this position
The University of Bristol is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate or Senior Research Associate to work on AI-driven downscaling of environmental variables for the health community in the School of Geographical Sciences, United Kingdom.
The multidisciplinary project will apply diffusion models and generative machine learning to climate model output, enhancing spatial and temporal resolution. The research will investigate extreme weather events—including heatwaves, droughts, floods, and tropical cyclones—climate hazards, environmental exposure, and climate epidemiology.
The successful researcher will use health data to calculate exposure for health outcomes such as hospitalisations, preterm birth, and low birth weight across the UK. There may also be an opportunity to contribute to further development of the diffusion model. The postholder will collaborate with institutions and project partners and is expected to publish one to two papers during the post.
Applicants should have experience analysing large climate, observational, or reanalysis datasets; a relevant postgraduate research degree or equivalent professional experience; evidence of scientific excellence; conference presentations; publications in respected journals; the ability to lead peer-reviewed publications; and excellent written and oral communication skills.
The position is full time at 35 hours per week and is funded until 30 March 2028, with possible extension subject to further funding. Salary ranges from £40,704 to £45,641 at Grade I or £45,641 to £51,258 at Grade J per annum. The application deadline is 23 November 2026 at 23:59 UK time.
Informal enquiries may be directed to Professor Dann Mitchell at [email protected] or Dr Emily Vosper at [email protected]. Applications should be submitted through the University of Bristol application portal.
