About this position
The Woolston Lab at Northeastern University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for an NIH-funded program exploring the biosynthetic potential of Clostridial bacteria, an important but comparatively understudied source of bioactive compounds and unusual enzymes.
The research combines anaerobic microbiology, enzyme biochemistry, and natural products discovery. One direction investigates cobalamin-dependent radical S-adenosylmethionine enzymes fused to non-ribosomal peptide synthetase adenylation domains. These enzymes may catalyze stereoselective carbon-backbone methylation reactions that have not previously been described in non-ribosomal peptide synthetase biochemistry.
A complementary direction seeks novel antimicrobials from cellulolytic Clostridia. The project uses heterologous expression of biosynthetic gene clusters in a newly developed Clostridial chassis strain, alongside elicitor screening to activate cryptic pathways in native producers.
The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with Professor Woolston and an interdisciplinary team of graduate students and undergraduate researchers. Activities include independent experimental planning, assay development, bacterial genetics, cultivation under strictly anaerobic conditions, enzyme characterization, genome mining, biosynthetic gene cluster analysis, data interpretation, and preparation of scholarly research materials.
The Woolston Lab emphasizes open scientific exchange, mentorship, independent research, and collaborative scientific development. The researcher will also contribute to mentoring junior lab members and communicate findings through group meetings, conferences, publications, presentations, and reports to the funding agency.
