About this position
Lehigh University’s Center for Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience is seeking a postdoctoral research associate to contribute to collaborative research within a new multi-university consortium. The researcher will work under the mentorship of center associate director Ethan Yang and associate professor Hong-Yi Li, alongside faculty and researchers across the center.
The research will address catastrophe modeling and resilience assessment, with opportunities to pursue fundamental or applied work in flood hazard modeling, flood risk and loss estimation, and resilience analysis. Topics include riverine, pluvial, and compound flooding, as well as the integration of artificial intelligence into catastrophe modeling.
A particular emphasis is placed on large language models and related generative AI tools for supporting model development, automating modeling workflows, and translating model outputs into actionable risk insights. The researcher may also engage in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, probabilistic modeling, uncertainty quantification, surrogate modeling, data science, GIS, remote sensing, and code development.
The postdoctoral researcher will develop independent research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, present at conferences, assist with grant proposals, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, and participate in seminars, workshops, and other Center for Catastrophe Modeling and Resilience activities. The role offers multidisciplinary collaboration inside and outside Lehigh University and supports career development across academia, industry, and government.
Work is conducted on campus in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, within Lehigh’s inclusive and collaborative research environment.
