About this position

Northeastern University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Biology to join the Copos Group in Boston, Massachusetts. The group develops computational and mathematical theoretical models addressing open problems in cell biology, with particular interest in how mechanics shapes tissue development, healing, and homeostasis.

The postdoctoral researcher will conduct basic or applied research using existing theories and methods, while contributing to the interpretation and publication of results and grants. The work will involve initiating, executing, and completing research and experiments, preparing research papers and presentations, supporting grant proposals, and helping manage laboratory activities.

Under the supervision of PI Calina Copos, the researcher will collaborate with cell and developmental biologists. The research environment combines mathematical biology with theoretical and numerical approaches, including agent-based models, continuum partial differential equation descriptions, dynamical systems, and machine-learning-based surrogate model discovery. The role also includes training graduate students and functional supervision of supporting research staff.

This is a research-focused appointment with no required teaching responsibilities, although teaching may be available for interested researchers. The position is generally limited to two years and is based at Northeastern’s Boston Main Campus.

Funding details

Full-time employment with an expected hiring salary range of $60,315 to $85,192.50. Northeastern University offers benefits for eligible employees, including medical, vision, dental, paid time off, tuition assistance, wellness and life benefits, retirement benefits, and commuting and transportation support.

What's required

Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Mathematics, or Physics and be able to undertake substantially full-time research or scholarship under the supervision of a senior scholar. Research experience in mathematical biology is expected, preferably using theoretical and numerical approaches to understand mechanisms in biological systems. Strongly preferred expertise includes agent-based models, continuum PDE descriptions, dynamical systems, and/or machine-learning-based surrogate model discovery. The appointment is intended as a two-year commitment, with renewal after one year contingent on funding availability.
