About this position
The postdoctoral researcher will join the Dass Microbial Ecology Laboratory at Texas A&M AgriLife Research in College Station, Texas, to study how pathogens and antimicrobial resistance move across wildlife, livestock, food systems, and people.
This position centers on the laboratory’s biosurveillance work on arthropods of veterinary and public health importance, including ticks, mosquitoes, flies, and mites. The researcher will develop and apply molecular and genomic tools to identify arthropod species, detect the pathogens they carry, and monitor resistance traits relevant to control. The project combines specimen collection, colony maintenance, qPCR-based detection, resistance marker screening, and transcriptomic and sequencing analysis.
Day-to-day research will involve building and validating nucleic-acid assays, processing field-collected specimens, characterizing insecticide and acaricide susceptibility, and applying RNA sequencing, amplicon, metagenomic, and other sequencing approaches to arthropod transcriptomes, microbiomes, and viromes. The role also supports a tiered detection workflow that includes qPCR screening, digital PCR confirmation, and nanopore sequencing, with validation against field, environmental, and reference samples.
The successful candidate will work with field, bioinformatics, and modeling collaborators, contribute to decision support for surveillance partners, lead first-author manuscripts, and help train graduate and undergraduate students in arthropod handling and molecular methods. The lab also offers mentoring in grant writing and independent research and collaborates with federal, national laboratory, and university partners.
Training on digital PCR and nanopore sequencing platforms will be provided as needed.

What's required
A Ph.D. in Entomology, Molecular Biology, Parasitology, Veterinary Science, Microbiology, or a closely related field must be completed by the start date. Applicants need laboratory experience with nucleic acid extraction, PCR, and qPCR, including primer design and assay optimization; experience handling, rearing, or identifying insects, ticks, or mites; experience analyzing molecular or sequencing data in R or a comparable environment; at least one first-author peer-reviewed publication; and clear scientific writing with the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Preferred qualifications include research on insecticide or acaricide resistance and target-site mutations, RNA sequencing library preparation and transcriptome or virome analysis, experience with ticks, mosquitoes, or flies of veterinary or public health importance, qPCR reference gene validation or other formal assay validation, digital PCR, multiplex assay design, nanopore sequencing, field collection or surveillance in livestock or wildlife settings, and teaching or mentoring experience. If the doctoral degree has not yet been conferred at the time of application, a letter from the official Graduate Office, Registrar’s Office, or PhD Committee Chair certifying completion of all degree requirements and stating the conferral date is required.
