About this position
This postdoctoral fellowship with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service (USDA-ARS) in Athens, Georgia focuses on Salmonella ecology and persistence in pasture-based poultry production systems.
Working under the guidance of mentor Sohyun Cho, the fellow will investigate how Salmonella survives, adapts, persists, and transmits in poultry environments. The project combines phenotypic characterization, whole-genome sequencing, and transcriptomic profiling to build a detailed understanding of the organism across the production system.
The research is designed to support the development of science-based strategies to reduce Salmonella contamination during pre-harvest stages and improve food safety. The opportunity is embedded within USDA-ARS, the USDA’s in-house scientific research agency, with a mission centered on agricultural problem solving and innovation for producers and communities.
The fellowship emphasizes both laboratory and analytical research, including investigating environmental persistence, interpreting molecular and genomic data, and understanding the links between poultry production practices, environmental conditions, and foodborne pathogen risks. The appointment is full time and initially one year, with possible renewal depending on recommendation and available funds.
