About this position

Postdoctoral Research Associate in Physics-Based Ocean and Environmental Modeling

The University of New Hampshire is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the Center for Acoustics Research and Education (CARE), supporting a federally funded Office of Naval Research project in Durham, United States. The work focuses on physics-based environmental and ocean modeling for research on ocean conditions and unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) operations.

The researcher will develop, implement, evaluate, and integrate numerical models of currents, tides, waves, temperature, salinity, stratification, and related environmental states. Experience with HYCOM, ROMS, FVCOM, or comparable ocean circulation models is required. Responsibilities include regional model configuration, simulation, model-data integration, validation, uncertainty assessment, data assimilation, downscaling, and reproducible analysis of large observational, reanalysis, remote-sensing, and operational datasets.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in physical oceanography, ocean engineering, ocean or atmospheric sciences, physics, applied physics, Earth science, applied mathematics, or a related discipline. Strong scientific programming skills in Python, MATLAB, Fortran, C/C++, or comparable tools are expected. U.S. citizenship is required because of export-control and project-access requirements. Preferred experience includes HYCOM, operational ocean forecasting, coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave modeling, underwater acoustics, and federally funded multidisciplinary research.

The full-time position offers annual compensation of approximately $70,000 and is contingent on external sponsor funding. Applicants should submit a resume/CV and cover letter through the Workday application portal. No application deadline is stated.

Funding details

Full-time postdoctoral staff position with an annual compensation pay range listed as $70,000. Employment is supported by external sponsor funding from a federally funded Office of Naval Research project and continued employment depends on the availability of those funds; funding changes may result in modification or termination in accordance with applicable policies.

What's required

A Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Ocean Engineering, Ocean or Atmospheric Sciences, Physics, Applied Physics, Earth Science, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field is required. Applicants need demonstrated experience with physics-based numerical modeling of ocean, coastal, atmospheric, or related geophysical systems; experience with HYCOM, ROMS, FVCOM, or comparable ocean models; and sufficient scientific-computing and numerical-modeling expertise to conduct advanced research independently. Required or relevant skills include numerical model configuration, forcing, simulation, analysis, multidimensional environmental datasets, scientific programming in Python, MATLAB, Fortran, C/C++, or comparable tools, model validation, uncertainty assessment, data assimilation, initialization, downscaling, strong analytical and communication skills, independent and collaborative work, reproducible documentation, and meeting project milestones. U.S. citizenship is required. Preferred qualifications include direct HYCOM experience, regional ocean forecasting, data assimilation, downscaling, coupled ocean-atmosphere-wave modeling, underwater acoustic or sound-speed-profile knowledge, multidisciplinary federally funded research experience, and a strong peer-reviewed research record. Applicants must upload a resume/CV and cover letter.
