About this position
The University of Cambridge is recruiting a Postdoctoral Research Associate in protein self-assembly and biomineralisation within the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry. Hosted in Professor Tuomas Knowles' group, the project is part of an Advanced Research + Invention Agency (ARIA) international consortium involving Cambridge departments, the University of Liverpool and AMOLF in the Netherlands.
The research will develop methods to control the self-assembly of natural and synthetic proteins into two- and three-dimensional material phases. The postdoctoral researcher will combine macro-scale printing with bottom-up protein-templated biomineralisation, develop protein toolkits for controlled nucleation, protection, alignment and locking, and create protein-inorganic magnetic components and conversion-capable nanocrystals using droplet, flow and field processing.
The role offers interdisciplinary research spanning chemistry, materials science, biology, chemical engineering, microfluidics, protein design, nanocrystal synthesis and 3D printing. Duties also include contributing to the supervision of PhD and Master's students and maintaining custom group instruments.
Applicants should hold, or be close to obtaining, a PhD in physics, chemistry, materials science, biochemistry or a related field. Relevant experience includes crystalline inorganic materials synthesis or characterisation, microfluidics, flow or spray patterning, 3D printing, templating, protein design, nucleation, self-assembly and biomineralisation.
The appointment is fixed-term for 18 months initially, with a possible additional 18 months subject to project milestones. The salary is £33,662–£46,970. Applications must include a CV, covering letter and publications list and should quote reference MA51551. The closing date is 12 November 2026.
