About this position

The University of Exeter is recruiting a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate or Postdoctoral Research Fellow for the BBSRC-funded E-Prep II project, “Single and Combined Bacterial Infections Across Multiple Cropping Systems: Risks, Preparation and Mitigation.” The fixed-term appointment is based in Cornwall, United Kingdom, and runs from 4 January 2027 to 12 November 2030.

The project examines the biology and risks posed by bacterial pathogens and planthopper vectors to UK food security. Research will focus on the native reed planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus and its role in transmitting Syndrome Basses Richesses (SBR), which is affecting European potato and sugar beet production. The work will investigate host adaptation and gene flow in UK populations, combining fundamental biology with applied crop-protection outcomes.

The successful researcher will undertake biological, molecular and bioinformatic research, including next-generation sequencing, transcriptomic and population-genomic analyses, DNA and RNA extraction, insect rearing and RNA interference. The post-holder will also contribute to related activities in the Bass laboratory.

Applicants for the Research Associate level should hold or be nearing completion of a relevant PhD, or have equivalent experience, together with appropriate research skills and the ability to communicate results and contribute to proposals. Research Fellow applicants should hold a relevant PhD or equivalent, demonstrate specialist expertise and research leadership, and be able to develop projects, supervise colleagues and contribute to funding activity.

The salary is £35,302–£36,320 for the Postdoctoral Research Associate grade and £44,352–£46,970 for the Postdoctoral Research Fellow grade. Applications close at 23:59 on 15 November 2026. Enquiries may be directed to Chris Bass at [email protected].
