About this position
RIKEN is recruiting a Research Fellow / Postdoctoral Fellow for the Kawaguchi Laboratory of Biomedical Non-Equilibrium Physics at the RIKEN Wako Campus in Saitama, Japan. The lab works across biophysics, soft matter physics, chemical physics, and broader life sciences, studying topics such as cell differentiation, multicellular dynamics, evolution, phase transitions, chromatin structure, protein phase separation, self-assembly, and structural color in bird feathers.
The successful candidate will join a new laboratory and contribute proactively to interdisciplinary research projects. Depending on expertise and interests, the work may include in vitro protein reconstitution, biochemical analysis, structural and optical analysis, molecular simulation, live imaging, genomics, and related computational or experimental approaches. Collaboration with international teams is also mentioned.
This is a fixed-term, non-tenure-track research position. The salary starts at about 4 million yen per year, with additional allowances such as commuting and housing support, plus social insurance. The posting notes that the position requires commuting to the workplace, although telecommuting exists in general.
Eligibility: applicants must hold or expect to obtain a doctoral degree in life sciences, chemistry, physics, computational science, or a related field. Experience in biochemistry and protein science is especially welcome, but candidates from biophysics, soft matter physics, computational science, genomics/bioinformatics, and developmental biology are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should be able to work in English and be motivated to help establish a new lab.
Application window: July 1, 2026 to July 1, 2027. Applications may close earlier once a suitable candidate is found. Apply through the official RIKEN posting page and submit the required electronic documents, including a resume and list of achievements.
