About this position
This postdoctoral role is based in IDEA Bio at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN), The University of Queensland, St Lucia Campus. The successful researcher will work within the IDEA Bio LEARN team on the biological interpretation and integration of multi-omics data to generate practical insights for advanced biomanufacturing.
The project brings together fermentation, proteomics, metabolomics and ¹³C-labelling data to understand microbial metabolism in depth. The fellow will help identify metabolic bottlenecks and regulatory changes, build mechanistic explanations of phenotype, and translate these findings into rational strain design and bioprocess optimisation strategies.
The role is strongly collaborative and sits at the interface of systems biology, fermentation science, analytical chemistry and software-enabled data analysis. The fellow will contribute to genome-scale metabolic model curation, ¹³C metabolic flux analysis, and the development of innovative analytical workflows that support both research and industry-facing service activities.
Alongside the research output, the position includes mentoring and development activities within a multidisciplinary environment, including support for Honours and Higher Degree by Research students where appropriate. The wider UQ environment offers extensive research facilities, interdisciplinary collaboration and strong links across research, government, industry and the community.

What's required
Completion or near completion of a PhD in biochemistry, metabolic engineering, systems biology or a related field with a strong focus on microbial metabolism. Demonstrated experience integrating at least two omics data types, such as proteomics and metabolomics, to explain metabolic phenotypes mechanistically. Strong understanding of microbial metabolism, including central carbon metabolism, energy and redox balancing, and metabolic regulation. Sound knowledge of statistical analysis of omics data, including differential abundance testing, multiple-testing correction, replication, batch effects and experimental design. Familiarity with constraint-based metabolic modelling, such as flux balance analysis, and ability to interpret and refine model predictions using experimental data. Demonstrated research capability with peer-reviewed publications, proficiency in Python or R, and strong organisational, problem-solving, interpersonal and communication skills. Experience in fermentation, metabolic engineering, metabolomics, multivariate analysis, stable-isotope labelling, ¹³C metabolic flux analysis, genome-scale model curation, or enzyme-constrained or kinetic models is highly regarded.
