About this position
The University of Queensland is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Bioinformatics and Research Software Engineering to join the Integrated Design Environment for Advanced Biomanufacturing (IDEA Bio), based at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology.
The fellow will work with the LEARN team in a collaborative research environment focused on synthetic biology, advanced biomanufacturing and data-driven bioprocess optimisation. The project involves transforming fermentation, proteomics, metabolomics and 13C-labelling data into reproducible computational workflows, metabolic models and meaningful visualisations.
The research will include designing, developing and maintaining computational pipelines for multi-omics data analysis, genome-scale metabolic reconstruction, data curation, quality control, metabolic pathway visualisation and integration with constraint-based models. The fellow will also contribute to open-source software and research outputs that support rational strain design and commercially relevant biomanufacturing applications.
Working alongside systems biologists, fermentation scientists and analytical chemists, the successful researcher will translate complex biological and fermentation data into robust analytical capabilities for academic and industry clients. The role also includes contributing to multidisciplinary collaboration, supporting research translation, and helping supervise and develop Honours and Higher Degree by Research students.
IDEA Bio provides an interdisciplinary setting connecting computational biology, bioinformatics, metabolic engineering, fermentation science and research software engineering. The University of Queensland offers access to advanced research facilities, equipment, collaborative networks and opportunities for academic and industry impact.

What's required
Applicants should have completed or be near completion of a PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, systems biology, metabolic engineering or a related field, with substantial software development experience. Required capabilities include understanding metabolism and metabolic pathways; developing, testing and validating metabolic reconstruction and visualisation tools; building biological data-analysis software; proficiency in Python or a comparable language; software engineering practices including Git, automated testing, packaging and documentation; and developing automated, reproducible and maintainable pipelines using Snakemake, Nextflow, containerisation or equivalent technologies. Applicants should also demonstrate peer-reviewed research publications, strong organisational and problem-solving skills, effective multidisciplinary collaboration, and strong interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with constraint-based modelling, genome-scale reconstruction, metabolic pathway visualisation, biological databases, cloud or HPC environments, research data systems, or 13C metabolic flux analysis is highly regarded. Pre-employment checks may include verification of Australian work rights, qualifications and mandatory immunisations.
