About this position
Postdoctoral research position in terahertz structured beams and hybrid semiconductor chips
Vilnius University and the State Research Institute Center for Physical Sciences and Technology (FTMC) in Vilnius, Lithuania, are offering a postdoctoral research position at the Centre of Competence for Terahertz and Hybrid Semiconductor Chips. The project focuses on generating and controlling structured sub-terahertz beams—including orbital angular momentum (OAM), Bessel, and Airy beams—using meta-antennas and active metasurfaces.
The researcher will develop a unified sub-THz channel model for non-paraxial and phase-structured beams, perform electromagnetic simulations, and validate models against experimental data. Responsibilities also include designing meta-antennas and active metasurfaces with CST/HFSS, supporting prototype fabrication through femtosecond laser ablation, and conducting THz characterization of beam profiles, phase, amplitude, efficiency, and losses.
The project further involves chip-to-free-space interfaces, photonic-component integration, loss-reduction strategies, and construction and testing of a laboratory wireless communication channel operating from 140–320 GHz over distances greater than 100 metres. Research areas include physics, electrical engineering, photonics, RF integration, metasurfaces, antennas, wireless communications, and semiconductor-device technology.
The appointment is a full-time, fixed-term employment contract for up to 24 months, with an expected start no later than September 2027. The salary is EUR 36,510 per year including taxes, and researchers will have access to Vilnius University and FTMC facilities, including cleanrooms, THz and photonics laboratories, epitaxy, and device-processing infrastructure.
Applicants need a recently awarded PhD in a relevant discipline, defended at an institution different from the applying institution. Applications should include a narrative CV, selected publications, PhD certificate, and a motivation letter describing the applicant’s topic of interest. The offer deadline is 4 December 2026 at 23:59 Vilnius time.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, photonics, nanotechnology, or a related discipline obtained within the five years before the postdoctoral position begins. The dissertation must have been defended at an institution different from the one to which the candidate applies. Candidates should have knowledge of photonics and RF integration and experience in THz or mmWave physics and technology, structured light such as OAM, Bessel, or Airy beams, or metasurfaces and antennas. Hands-on experience with THz continuous-wave systems, beam profiling, electrical lock-in detection, VNA and probe-station measurements, or wireless-channel and communication-link characterization, including BER and SNR, is relevant. The application must include a narrative CV, a list of the most important scientific publications, a copy of the PhD certificate, and a motivation letter stating the topic of interest.
How to apply
Prepare a narrative CV, a list of key scientific publications, a copy of the PhD certificate, and a motivation letter stating the topic of interest. Submit the application through the relevant Vilnius University or FTMC recruitment process before 4 December 2026 at 23:59 Vilnius time.
