About this position
This doctoral project at Uppsala University is part of the ERC grant DYCLEX and is hosted in the Department of Earth Sciences, within the Programme for Air, Water, and Landscape Science. The position is centred on the statistics and dynamics of compound climate extremes, bringing together meteorology, climate analysis and atmospheric science in an international research environment.
The successful PhD student will work on quantitative analyses of mid-latitude compound climate extremes in recent and future climates. The project asks how atmospheric dynamics and circulation features are linked to the occurrence of different surface compound extremes, and how that understanding can be used to assess event predictability and long-term trends. The work is research-focused and combines data analysis with physical interpretation of climate processes.
The Department of Earth Sciences describes itself as a broad and interdisciplinary geoscience environment, with researchers working on weather and climate alongside other Earth science topics. The doctoral student will be based in Uppsala and embedded in a large department with extensive expertise, international connections, and a strong focus on research and education in geoscience.
The position is supervised by Gabriele Messori and is connected to the wider DYCLEX research context on compound climate extremes. The advert also notes that the student may travel nationally and internationally and may take on limited voluntary teaching or supervising duties.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master’s (second-cycle) degree in climate science, meteorology, statistics, physics or related topics, or have completed at least 240 higher-education credits with at least 60 credits at Master’s level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits in the relevant subjects, or have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge. The candidate should be strongly self-driven, able to work independently and take initiative, with solid programming skills for data analysis, excellent spoken and written English, and good cooperation skills for international collaboration. Knowledge of atmospheric dynamics, a strong background in statistics, experience analysing large climate datasets, and experience working on physical drivers of climate extremes are meritorious; non-academic sector experience is also viewed positively.
