About this position
Centrum Badan Kosmicznych PAN / the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences is recruiting a Postdoctoral Researcher (F/M) for the EXOMHYCL project led by Daniel Mège. The project is part of research into whether Mars may still host volcanic activity and, specifically, whether hydrogen chloride (HCl) detected by the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter could be explained by volcanic seepage from the Martian subsurface.
The successful candidate will work on the geological and geochemical conditions that would allow HCl degassed from magmas to interact with an ice-rich subsurface before reaching the atmosphere. The research combines planetary geology, experimental geochemistry, atmospheric/crust interaction processes, and geochemical modelling. The post is closely linked to Mars exploration and to interpretations of ACS and NOMAD spectrometer observations from ExoMars TGO.
The position is based at the Space Research Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław, Poland, with planned research stays in Arkansas, USA, as part of the collaboration with the Arkansas Center for Space and Planetary Sciences, University of Arkansas. The post is full-time and temporary, with a net salary of around 11,000 PLN per month. Employment begins around 1 January 2027 and may be extended up to a total of 42 months depending on research progress.
Eligibility is aimed at experienced postdoctoral researchers holding a PhD. Applicants should have publications in a relevant area, strong hands-on experience in experimental geochemistry using planetary simulation chambers, and good English communication skills demonstrated by papers and conference presentations. Experience in geochemical modelling is considered an advantage. The competition also includes formal NCN and Polish Academy of Sciences eligibility conditions, including requirements regarding the timing and institution of the PhD.
Applications must be submitted electronically by 15 December 2026. Candidates should send a CV, motivation letter, copy of the PhD diploma, and contact details for two referees. The application must include the required GDPR consent clause. Interviews are expected to be held remotely.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent and be an independent researcher with publications in a field related to geochemical processes at the crust-atmosphere interface. Strong prior experience in experimental geochemistry using planetary simulation chambers is required, including data acquisition and analysis and ideally basic maintenance. Demonstrated skills in geochemical modelling are an asset. Candidates should be willing to spend 32 months in Poland and 10 months in Arkansas in several non-consecutive stays. Good written and spoken English, evidenced by published scientific papers and conference presentations, is required, along with the ability to write scientific papers, prepare presentations, review literature critically, develop and apply new concepts, solve new problems creatively, and work effectively in a team. The competition is open to persons meeting the conditions of the Polish Academy of Sciences Act and the NCN regulations, including the rule that the PhD must have been awarded within the required career window and from another institution than CBK PAN or accompanied by a qualifying postdoctoral fellowship.
How to apply
Send the required documents electronically to [email protected] and [email protected] with competition number DK.110.K.7.2026.WR in the subject line. Include a CV, motivation letter, PhD diploma copy, and contact details for two referees. Add the required GDPR consent clause in your application documents.
