About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher in accelerator physics and free-electron laser (FEL) science at its Lemont, Illinois, USA site. The successful candidate will contribute to the conceptual design of a compact, wakefield-driven X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) for attosecond science.
The postdoctoral appointee will lead technical work in beam dynamics and FEL modeling, including start-to-end simulations connecting injector and linac performance to X-ray output. Research areas include compact XFEL design, high-brightness electron beams, wakefield and two-beam acceleration, high-gradient accelerator concepts, tunable two-color and mode-locked X-ray pulses, and flexible control of pulse timing, duration, intensity, temporal structure, and coherence.
Activities may involve MITHRA, WarpX, GENESIS, ELEGANT, RF-Track, and ImpactX, as well as AI/ML methods, surrogate models, automated optimization, high-performance computing, and large-scale parameter scans. The researcher will collaborate with Argonne scientists, accelerator physicists, FEL experts, and prospective users, and contribute to a conceptual design report for a scalable compact XFEL facility.
Applicants should have a PhD completed within the last five years or expected soon in accelerator physics or a related discipline. Candidates from physics, applied mathematics, computational science, electrical engineering, or related fields may be considered. Python, UNIX/Linux, and computational modeling or scientific software development experience are required. The appointment is full time and multi-year, with an expected hiring range of $35.04-$58.40 and comprehensive benefits.
