About this position
European XFEL is offering a postdoctoral scientist position for attosecond generation in its FEL Physics Group in the Hamburg area, Germany. The successful candidate will join the AttoSASE project within the wider Attosecond strategy program and work on improving the delivery, reliability, and generation capabilities of attosecond pulses at SASE3 and SASE2 in the soft and hard X-ray ranges.
The role focuses on R&D in free-electron laser physics and includes simulation studies on shaping radiation properties along the attosecond pulse, increasing peak power and pulse duration performance, and investigating alternative schemes such as super-radiant pulse generation. The appointee will also analyze performance together with acceleration operations, photon diagnostics, and experiments, with attention to pulse duration, operational user-friendliness, and possible improvements.
This is a collaborative position: the postdoctoral scientist will co-lead the R&D work package together with a colleague hired by DESY for the same purpose. The work takes place at European XFEL in Schenefeld, in the Hamburg metropolitan area, within an international and multicultural scientific environment.
Eligibility and requirements: applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent in FEL physics or accelerator physics. Strong knowledge of FEL physics and experience with FEL simulations are required. Previous experience with FEL attosecond pulse generation is an important advantage.
Contract and funding: the position is temporary and initially limited to 3 years, full-time, and comes with a transparent German public-service-style salary (TV-L 13) plus a scientific allowance. The advertisement also mentions a possible annual special payment and additional employee benefits, including pension support, relocation assistance, training opportunities, and flexible working arrangements.
How to apply: applicants must apply online through the provided portal and submit a CV, a motivation letter in English, and any reference letters. The application deadline is 20 November 2026.
For questions, the contact person listed is Gianluca Geloni ([email protected]).
