About this position
EPFL’s Micromechanical and Horological Design Laboratory (INSTANT-LAB) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to advance the design and modelling of flexure-based mechanisms. These compliant mechanisms generate motion through the elastic deformation of slender structural elements instead of conventional sliding or rolling joints.
The research addresses the performance trade-offs that limit high-performance flexure mechanisms, including motion range, load-carrying capability, stiffness and sensitivity to manufacturing variations. The researcher will contribute to a new framework that considers multiple performance criteria while improving robustness to manufacturing tolerances.
The project combines fundamental research supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation with an industrial collaboration supported by the Swiss Innovation Agency. The postdoctoral researcher will work closely with an industrial partner developing advanced adjustable-stiffness flexure-based load cells, while drawing on INSTANT-LAB’s more than fourteen years of expertise, patent portfolio and established industrial collaborations.
Activities include developing analytical and numerical models, creating innovative precision-engineering solutions, conducting experimental validation and performance testing, publishing in leading scientific journals, and collaborating with academic and industrial partners. The work is based at EPFL’s campus in Neuchâtel, within a scientific and entrepreneurial research environment with international collaboration opportunities and state-of-the-art facilities.
