About this position

Linnaeus University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher in sociology to study how artificial intelligence and autonomous systems are reshaping professional knowledge in medicine. The project focuses on physicians and the transformation of expertise, professional judgment, autonomy, ethics and responsibility as AI becomes embedded in clinical work.

The research will investigate how AI affects physicians’ routine and knowledge-intensive work, discretionary space, reasoning and collaboration across generalist and specialist competencies. It will also examine which forms of human knowledge and skill may be replaced by AI, which new competencies are needed, and how intensified AI use influences the doctor-patient relationship, transparency and trust.

The project is designed in collaboration with general practitioners and is rooted in everyday clinical practice. Proposed research should address physicians’ professional knowledge—how it is created, developed, used and changed through AI-based tools—while engaging with theories from the sociology of professions and methods suitable for studying AI and clinical knowledge in practice.

The position is located in the Department of Social Studies and connected to the Forum for Research on Professions, a multidisciplinary environment of approximately 50 researchers. The department brings together expertise in sociology, peace and development studies and gender studies, with methodological strengths in ethnography, qualitative research, quantitative methods and computational social science.

The project forms part of WASP-HS, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program–Humanity and Society. Research is conducted under a steering group of academic supervisors and practicing physicians, supported by a reference group involving the Swedish Society of Medicine and WASP-HS. The postdoctoral researcher will primarily conduct research and may contribute up to 20% of full-time teaching and supervision, while participating in departmental and external research networks.
