About this position
The University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg, Germany, is offering a 24-month, full-time postdoctoral/project employee position in the Faculty of Engineering, Institute for Energy and Materials Processes, Particle Science and Technology group. The project, Direct Bicarbonate-to-CO Electrolysis: Unlocking Green Syngas for a Resilient, Fossil-Free Chemical Industry (Bicarb2Syn), develops sustainable routes for converting bicarbonate and atmospheric CO2 into CO for green syngas production.
The successful researcher will lead process and equipment activities for scalable electrode manufacturing. Responsibilities include commissioning and qualifying an ultrasonic spray-coating system, adapting and validating spray-drying equipment, planning spray-drying experiments for hierarchical supraparticles, developing rheology-optimized inks and dispersions, and implementing analytical and quality-assurance methods. The role also involves transferring laboratory formulations to pilot-scale roll-to-roll coating and laser-drying processes, defining quality criteria for coatings and particles, coordinating research staff and student assistants, and collaborating with Greenlyte, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, and Forschungszentrum Jülich.
Candidates must hold a PhD and an above-average degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, chemistry, materials science, particle technology, or a related discipline. Relevant experience includes spray drying, dispersion and ink formulation, particle characterization, coating processes, functional materials, process technology, and experimental project management. Experience in electrode fabrication, CO2 electrolysis, or electrochemical energy conversion is advantageous. Excellent English is required; German is beneficial.
The position starts on 1 January 2027 or later and is paid according to TV-L 13, with a gross annual salary range of approximately €59,324–€84,319. Applications including a motivation letter, CV, and supporting documents must be submitted online by 25 November 2026, quoting reference number 527-26.
