About this position
The University of Duisburg-Essen in Duisburg, Germany, is recruiting two doctoral researchers/research associates for the project “Direct Bicarbonate-to-CO Electrolysis: Unlocking Green Syngas for a Resilient, Fossil-Free Chemical Industry (Bicarb2Syn)”. The positions are based in the Faculty of Engineering, Institute for Energy and Materials Processes, Particle Science and Technology.
The research addresses sustainable energy conversion and carbon dioxide utilization. The Bicarb2Syn consortium, led by Greenlyte and involving Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin, the University of Duisburg-Essen and Forschungszentrum Jülich, is developing a direct electrochemical route for converting bicarbonate to carbon monoxide. The technology aims to use atmospheric CO2 as a feedstock for green syngas while avoiding inefficient thermal processing steps.
At UDE, the doctoral researchers will develop and scale electrode architectures for bicarbonate-to-CO electrolysis. Work includes designing tailored ink formulations and hierarchical supraparticles, processing catalyst powders and dispersed systems, optimizing slurries and inks, and producing reproducible catalyst-coated substrate (CCS) and catalyst-coated membrane (CCM) electrodes. The role also involves powder, dispersion, coating and electrochemical characterization, formulation and process-window development, roll-to-roll-like coating, laser drying, component screening, degradation analysis, process simulation and industrial validation.
Applicants should have an above-average degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, chemistry, materials science or a related field, with at least eight semesters of standard study. Experience with dispersed systems, slurry or ink formulation, coating processes or electrochemical systems is advantageous. Independent scientific working ability, motivation, reliability, teamwork and interest in international interdisciplinary research are expected.
The appointment starts on 1 January 2027 or later and runs for 36 months. It is full-time at 100%, with part-time employment possible, and is paid according to TV-L 13, approximately €59,324–€84,319 gross annually. The role offers the opportunity to pursue a PhD, alongside public-service benefits including annual leave, pension and bonus provisions. Apply by 25 November 2026, quoting reference number 528-26 and submitting a cover letter, CV and supporting documents to Dr. Fatih Özcan.
