About this position
Infinity Fiber is an eight-year, multidisciplinary research initiative at Karlstad University bringing together senior researchers, four postdoctoral researchers, and fourteen industry partners. This opening sits within the Department of Engineering and Chemical Sciences in the Faculty of Health, Science and Technology, where chemistry, chemical engineering, construction engineering, and environmental and energy systems are developed in a collaborative research environment.
The postdoctoral project is focused on separation science and process modelling for forest-based processes. The research aims to develop separation solutions for process streams linked to the forest-based value chain, with particular attention to fibre circularity, innovative separation processes, carbon circularity, and sustainability assessment. The work combines experimental studies, chemical characterisation, and modelling to develop and evaluate separation and purification strategies for complex streams, including waste streams and valuable side streams.
Within the project, the postdoc will work on thermic and adsorptive separation processes and on separation engineering for forest-industry streams. The research addresses monosaccharides, oligosaccharides, lignin-related components, degradation products, and other compounds that influence recyclability, material performance, and process robustness. A major aim is to support the selective recycling and valorisation of valuable components while helping remove or control substances that hinder fibre circularity.
The role is embedded in a practice-oriented setting with close interaction between chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental and energy systems, and industrial partners. The university highlights cooperation, day-to-day participation in the workplace community, and research that can be translated into practical utility.

What's required
Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, or equivalent qualifications from abroad, with a specialisation in separation science and process modelling. The PhD must be completed before appointment and normally no more than three years before the application deadline, unless special grounds apply. Strong documented research experience in separation science and process modelling is highly valued, along with publication record, completed master’s and doctoral courses in separation engineering and process modelling, experience characterising complex process streams, and ability to combine experiments with models. The post requires independent and responsible research, strong teamwork, good communication, sound judgment, and a good command of spoken and written English. Swedish proficiency is desirable.
How to apply
Submit the application through Karlstad University’s Varbi recruitment system. Include a CV, cover letter, administrative experience statement, publication list, language skills statement, PhD certificate or equivalent, up to 10 scientific publications, up to 5 popular-science/teaching materials, and two references. Ensure all documents are uploaded in the required format by the deadline.
