About this position

The Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in digital fabrication with concrete. This 14-month, full-time position is embedded in the 3D concrete printing research group within the Department of the Built Environment. The successful candidate will focus on developing digital structural design tools—such as parametric modelling and optimization strategies—for digital fabrication with concrete, including 3D printing and robotic processes. The overarching aim is to reduce the environmental footprint of concrete in the built environment by optimizing structural applications while considering manufacturing constraints and material behavior specific to digital fabrication methods.

The postdoc will have access to state-of-the-art experimental facilities, including a robotic and 3D concrete printing lab, custom experimental procedures, sensor technologies, and large-scale structural testing. The research group is dynamic, with a vibrant community of PhD students and staff working on related projects. The role bridges computational modelling, numerical analysis, material experimentation, and fabrication process development, supporting the group’s ambition to advance digitalization in concrete construction.

In addition to research (approximately 80% of the position), the postdoc will contribute to educational innovation at TU/e, particularly by supporting the development of a hybrid/online BSc course on ‘digital structures’ as part of the EuroTeQ universities alliance. The candidate will also supervise master’s graduation projects in digital fabrication and structural design, strengthening both research and education in this field.

Applicants should hold a PhD in structural engineering and design, civil engineering, 3D printing, computational design, or a related field. Required experience includes structural design of concrete structures, development and application of design tools, numerical analysis, and/or structural testing. Candidates must demonstrate high-quality academic research output, teamwork, project management skills, and excellent English proficiency.

Employment conditions include a competitive salary (scale 10, €4,241–€5,538), a year-end bonus, vacation pay, high-quality training programs, technical infrastructure, on-campus childcare, sports facilities, partially paid parental leave, commuting and home working allowances, tax compensation (30% facility), and moving expenses compensation. International candidates are supported by a dedicated Staff Immigration Team and the TU/e Postdoc Association.

Applications should be submitted online and must include a cover letter, CV with publication list, and up to five research outputs. The vacancy remains open until filled, with priority given to complete applications. For further information, contact Assistant Professor Rob Wolfs ([email protected]).
