About this position
Eindhoven University of Technology is seeking a postdoctoral researcher for the UI-PRIG project, Understanding & Improving Product Risk Information in Gambling. The two-year interdisciplinary project is conducted by TU/e in collaboration with the Trimbos Institute and is based in the Human-Technology Interaction group within the Department of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences.
The research addresses how online gambling platforms communicate risks, winning probabilities, and bonus conditions. The project combines human–computer interaction, human–AI interaction, generative AI, behavioural research, digital well-being, and participatory design to create more transparent interfaces that support informed decisions and harm prevention.
The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to two open-source research tools. KanScan is an AI-supported website analysis tool for evaluating the visibility, clarity, accessibility, and interpretability of gambling-related risk information. The work includes developing automated website-analysis procedures with Python, browser automation, and large language models, followed by validation against human expert assessments. KanLab is an experimental prototyping environment using configurable web components and generative AI to produce realistic mock-up gambling websites for exploring alternative communication approaches.
Alongside technical development, the researcher will design and conduct cognitive walkthroughs, interviews, and co-design workshops with non-gamblers, prevention experts, and people with lived experience of gambling-related harm. The role involves analysing qualitative and quantitative data and translating findings into evidence-based recommendations for responsible digital information design.
The researcher will work under the supervision of Dr. Max V. Birk at TU/e and Dr. Antonius J. van Rooij at the Trimbos Institute. The interdisciplinary research environment brings together expertise in HCI, artificial intelligence, games, behavioural science, and digital well-being, with outputs intended for scientific publications, open-source software, regulators, public health professionals, and researchers.
