About this position

Join the Lengefeld Lab at Karolinska Institutet for a postdoctoral position focused on the intersection of metabolism, aging, and stem cell biology. This Novo Nordisk-funded project aims to unravel how stem cell metabolism contributes to aging and the decline in tissue regeneration, a major health issue as populations live longer. The research will investigate rejuvenation of the blood system and its impact on systemic metabolic functions, with the goal of restoring cellular functions and extending healthspan.

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will work under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Jette Lengefeld in a modern research hub (NEO) at Karolinska Institutet, Huddinge. The lab is part of the Center for Hematology and Regenerative Medicine (HERM) and the Department of Medicine. You will join an international, interdisciplinary team with access to state-of-the-art core facilities, including cell sorting, microscopy, sequencing, mouse facilities, and clinical samples. The position is supported by the prestigious Swedish Research Council Starting Grant and offers a creative, inspiring environment with wide-ranging expertise and collaborative opportunities.

Your project will utilize hematopoietic stem cells from mice to identify metabolic factors driving stem cell aging. Techniques include flow cytometry, RNA/DNA sequencing, proteomics, metabolomics, immunofluorescence microscopy, HSC transplantation, and multi-organ assays. The appointment is for two years, with possible extension for up to two additional years, and comes with a monthly salary and state university benefits.

Applicants must have a PhD in hematology, hematopoietic stem cell biology, aging biology, or a related field, with at least one first-author publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Strong expertise in working with mice and Laboratory Animal Science certification are required. Additional desirable skills include advanced flow cytometry, experimental stem cell biology, teamwork, research communication, logical thinking in biological terms, and proficiency in R and statistics. Excellent English communication and analytical skills are essential. Eligibility requires a PhD or equivalent foreign degree, preferably completed within the last three years, though earlier completion may be considered for special reasons.

Karolinska Institutet is one of the world's leading medical universities, offering successful medical research and the largest range of medical education in Sweden. The university fosters crossover collaborations and maintains close relationships with healthcare providers, ensuring top-quality education and research. Employees benefit from collective agreements and a supportive academic environment.

To apply, submit your application through the Varbi recruitment system by 15 May 2026. Include a complete CV (max 1 page), short publication list, positions held, awards, prizes, and a link to your Google Scholar profile. Do not apply via email. For more information, visit the supervisor's academic page or the application portal.
