About this position
The Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Tampere University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Micromechanics and Nanostructures group. The position focuses on the micromechanics of multi-metal carbides, with an emphasis on advanced electron microscopy characterization to correlate deformation substructures with micromechanical properties. The research is part of the HECTOR Proof-of-Concept project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, which aims to develop and characterize sustainable multi-metal carbide compositions with enhanced mechanical properties.
The group, led by Assistant Professor Gaurav Mohanty, specializes in studying the deformation behavior of materials at small length scales using in-situ micromechanical testing inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Research topics include mechanical deformation across a wide range of conditions, from cryogenic to high temperatures, and from quasistatic to high strain rates. The group employs advanced techniques such as nanoindentation and focused ion beam (FIB) milled test geometries to investigate slip, twinning, cracks, and other deformation mechanisms in metals, alloys, ceramics, polymers, composites, thin films, and coatings.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art research infrastructure, including the Tampere Microscopy Center and the OperaRI platform for energy materials. The group collaborates on several high-profile projects, including DURATRANS, HERBIE, and H2MIRI, and has a strong publication record in leading materials science journals.
Applicants should hold a PhD in materials science, mechanical engineering, physics, or a related field, and have experience with micromechanics, electron microscopy, and mechanical testing. The position is fully funded, with salary and benefits according to Tampere University guidelines. The application deadline is March 8, 2026. For more information, visit the group’s academic page or contact Assistant Professor Gaurav Mohanty at [email protected].
