About this position

The University of Amsterdam is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Strontium Quantum Gases Group at the Institute of Physics. The project focuses on quantum simulation and quantum computing with individual strontium atoms held in optical tweezers.

The group develops experimental methods for manipulating single strontium atoms and uses them to investigate new directions in quantum science. The postdoctoral researcher will help explore topics including three-dimensional spin systems, the dynamics of spin excitations on fractals, and qudit-based quantum systems. The work is embedded in the QDNL KAT-1 Neutral Atom Quantum Computing team and involves strong collaboration with the Quantum Computing team at Eindhoven University of Technology.

The role combines hands-on experimental physics with the development of a sophisticated tweezer machine. Activities include debugging and taking data, designing and constructing machine upgrades, analysing results, conducting literature research, writing scientific articles, and contributing to funding acquisition. The researcher will be encouraged to take initiative, develop independent ideas, and participate in group activities such as educating master's and PhD students, presenting research, maintaining laboratory organisation, and engaging with societal and industry stakeholders.

The Strontium Quantum Gases Group is part of the Quantum Gases and Quantum Information cluster within the Van der Waals-Zeeman Institute for Experimental Physics. Led by Professor Florian Schreck, the group studies ultracold strontium gases for quantum sensing, many-body physics, and quantum computing. Its wider activities include superradiant clocks, atom interferometers, Rb-Sr mixtures, optical clock development, and collaborations with industry, startups, and users of quantum technology.

The position offers an opportunity to work in an international experimental research environment spanning quantum gases, quantum information, neutral-atom platforms, and emerging quantum technologies.
