The University of Amsterdam is recruiting a PhD candidate to help develop a continuously operating optical atomic clock in the Ultracold Strontium Group at the Institute of Physics. The project addresses a fundamental limitation of conventional optical clocks, which operate in pulses and require many hours of averaging to reach their ultimate precision. The candidate will work on a zero-deadtime clock that continuously interrogates ultracold strontium atoms. The planned system will use a continu...

About this position

The University of Amsterdam is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Strontium Quantum Gases Group in the Institute of Physics. Led by Prof. Florian Schreck, the group is part of the Quantum Gases & Quantum Information cluster within the Van der Waals–Zeeman Institute for Experimental Physics.

The project focuses on developing continuous optical clocks based on ultracold strontium atoms. Optical clocks already enable extremely precise measurements of time and gravitational effects; this research aims to overcome the limitations of pulsed operation by continuously interrogating atomic samples.

You will contribute to two complementary approaches: a superradiant clock, based on lasing on an ultranarrow optical transition, and a zero-deadtime clock supplied by a continuous ultracold strontium source and multiple clock-interrogation zones. The work builds on the group’s continuous Bose–Einstein condensation technology and offers opportunities to advance quantum sensing and precision measurement.

Your activities will include experimental work with the clocks, debugging and data collection, designing and constructing machine upgrades, data analysis, literature research, scientific writing, and contributions to funding proposals. You will work alongside PhD students and other postdocs, develop independent research ideas, participate in teaching and group activities, and engage in outreach with societal and industrial stakeholders.

The research environment includes collaborations connected to Quantum Delta NL’s Ultracold Atom Quantum Sensing Testbed, as well as related work on optical time and frequency distribution, optical-clock prototypes, atom interferometry, quantum simulation with rubidium–strontium mixtures, optical tweezer arrays, and advanced optics.
