About this position
Argonne National Laboratory is hiring a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher in superconducting detector development and Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) instrumentation at its Lemont, Illinois, USA site.
The postdoctoral researcher will join Argonne's High Energy Physics and Materials Science teams to design, fabricate, characterize, integrate, and deploy large arrays of transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers based on microstrip-coupled technology. The work supports focal-plane arrays for the South Pole Telescope and broader CMB measurements, including instrumentation deployed at remote sites such as the South Pole.
The role also offers opportunities to study novel superconducting materials and device concepts for dark matter detection, neutrino measurements, millimeter-wave line-intensity mapping, quantum sensing, and related quantum devices. Research infrastructure includes dilution and adiabatic demagnetization refrigerators, low-noise DC and RF measurement systems, cleanroom fabrication facilities, and access to the Center for Nanoscale Materials.
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline, normally completed within the past five years. Relevant experience may include superconducting devices, quantum devices, low-temperature systems, microelectronics, nanoelectronics, device fabrication, and cryogenic measurements. Preferred skills include TES or KID detectors, thin-film deposition, lithography, etching, microwave resonators, and RF measurement.
The position is a long-term fixed-term, full-time postdoctoral appointment with an expected annual hiring range of $72,879–$121,465 plus comprehensive benefits. Applications are submitted through the Argonne Careers portal.

What's required
Applicants must have a recent or soon-to-be-completed PhD, completed within the last 0–5 years, in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a closely related field. Candidates should have experience developing or deploying superconducting devices or related technologies in quantum devices, low-temperature systems, microelectronics, or nanoelectronics, plus experience designing and fabricating superconducting or related devices and/or performing low-noise cryogenic measurements at millikelvin to few-kelvin temperatures. Preferred experience includes transition-edge sensors (TESs), kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs), cleanroom microfabrication, thin-film deposition, electron-beam or optical lithography, dry or wet etching, microwave resonator design and characterization, and RF or microwave measurement techniques. Candidates must demonstrate Argonne's core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
