About this position
Birkbeck, University of London is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher for the ESRC-supported project “Spontaneous movement to music in toddlers.” The project investigates why and how toddlers dance to music, focusing on the early development of movement–sound alignment and its relationship to social cognition, conversational turn-taking and musical performance.
The research will address the emergence, form and function of spontaneous dancing in toddlers, a behaviour reported by parents in very young children and observed across cultures. The project will use EEG, optical motion tracking and behavioural testing to study toddlers’ movement and responses to music in the laboratory.
Working under the supervision of Professor Adam Tierney, Professor Denis Mareschal and Professor Elisa Ferrè, the researcher will collaborate on experimental protocol design and piloting, participant recruitment, testing, data preprocessing and analysis, and the preparation of research outputs. The role offers an interdisciplinary research environment connecting developmental psychology, cognitive science and neuroscience, with a focus on infant and toddler behaviour, movement, music and brain activity.
