About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to investigate water and magnetic dynamics at nanostructured interfaces within the Jülich Centre for Neutron Science – Neutron Analytics for Energy Research (JCNS-3).
The research uses neutron spectroscopy, particularly quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS), to study the fundamental physicochemical properties of energy materials and interfaces. A central theme is the diffusion dynamics of water and small ligand molecules on iron oxide nanoparticle surfaces, with relevance to biomedical applications. The project also addresses coexisting magnetic excitations in iron oxide nanoparticles and the binding states and diffusion of adsorbate molecules on catalyst surfaces.
The researcher will conduct QENS and INS experiments, extend neutron spectroscopy studies to energy materials, and characterize magnetic modes in iron oxide nanoparticles. The work may combine neutron methods with complementary experimental techniques and theoretical simulations. Additional activities include synthesizing and physicochemically characterizing iron and other metal oxide nanoparticles or energy materials, participating in experiments at neutron sources, and contributing to the design and construction of instruments and sample environments.
The role offers a broad research environment involving practical work at neutron facilities, collaboration with other institutes, supervision of students, conference presentations, peer-reviewed publications, and the establishment of cooperation projects through Forschungszentrum Jülich.

What's required
Applicants must hold a Master's degree and PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science or a related discipline. Required experience includes neutron spectroscopy such as QENS, INS or NSE; structural characterization of matter, for example by powder diffraction; and wet-chemical synthesis, such as nanoparticle synthesis. Experience with high-level programming languages such as Python, knowledge of magnetism and nanostructured interfaces, previous supervision of graduate students, and laboratory or instrument responsibilities are advantageous. Very good written and spoken English, at least B2 level according to the CEFR, is required, along with independent working ability, a highly motivated and creative approach to research, and demonstrated teamwork, cooperation and communication skills.
