About this position

This postdoctoral position at the Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle (MNHN) in Paris is part of the BiSEv project, which investigates the biomechanics of birdsong using approaches from functional morphology, experimental data, comparative anatomy, and advanced modeling. The research aims to understand how vocal diversity in birds has evolved, the mechanisms that promote it, and its role in speciation and biodiversity generation.

The successful candidate will join a multidisciplinary team to explore the origin and evolution of vocal diversity in birds, focusing on the structure-function relationship of vocalization. The project integrates classic anatomical dissections with state-of-the-art microanatomy visualization techniques, including X-ray video (XROMM), fluid dynamics (3D PIV), and acoustic recordings, to reveal the hidden structures of the avian vocal system during song production. Comparative phylogenetic methods and modeling will be used to analyze biomechanics across individuals, sexes, and species, providing insights into morphological responses to functional, physical, and evolutionary constraints.

Main responsibilities include developing static and dynamic aero-acoustic models, managing the resulting modeling database, conducting data analyses, producing scientific figures, and writing publications. The postdoc will also co-supervise and train a Master 2 intern, actively communicate with the team and collaborators, and present results at seminars and conferences. Participation in the collective life of the laboratory is encouraged.

Applicants must have a PhD in bioacoustics or a closely related field, with experience in modeling (preferably using COMSOL or equivalent), scientific writing skills, and either knowledge of or willingness to learn about avian functional morphology and evolution. Proficiency in both French and English is required. Additional assets include knowledge of birdsong and interdisciplinary experience.
