About this position
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is recruiting a postdoctoral scholar for a project on rapid-response modeling of air quality and the health impacts of energy policy. The role sits within the Climate, Pollution, and Solutions group led by Professor Lyssa Freese and is embedded in a broader interdisciplinary effort with university researchers and environmental organizations.
The scholar will develop and apply air pollution and atmospheric chemistry models, interpret model outputs, and connect air quality modeling with integrated assessment or other energy-system and policy-oriented models. The project is designed to bridge environmental modeling with policy-relevant analysis, including outputs aimed at scientific and applied audiences.
The appointment is part of a collaborative research environment that includes the Earth System Science Department, CLEWS (Climate, Land, Energy, and Water Solutions), and AirUCI. This creates opportunities to work alongside atmospheric chemists, climate scientists, and civil/environmental engineers, with additional collaboration across public health, economics, and energy systems expertise.
The position is based at UC Irvine in Orange County, within a highly interdisciplinary department devoted to Earth as a coupled system. The project emphasizes teamwork across institutions and disciplines, and the scholar is expected to contribute to publications, conference presentations, and policy-facing research products.
