About this position
The Department of Earth System Science at the University of California, Irvine is seeking a postdoctoral scholar for the ADVIce project, an NSF- and NERC-funded US-UK collaboration examining decadal variability in Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. The project combines observations, reconstructions, and Earth System Models to understand why sea ice has shown both rapid decline and unusual periods of slowdown or surge.
The successful scholar will work in the Climate Modelling Lab at UCI under the supervision of Dr. Mark England and will collaborate with partners at the University of Exeter, the British Antarctic Survey, and the UK Met Office Hadley Centre. The research is centered on diagnosing the drivers of recent sea-ice variability and improving near-term projections of how these patterns may evolve under future warming.
The postdoctoral researcher will design, run, and analyze a new set of CESM2 large-ensemble simulations on the NSF-NCAR Derecho supercomputer, extending existing simulations to the present day to capture recent Arctic slowdown and Antarctic surge periods. The role also includes leading peer-reviewed publications, presenting at international conferences, and carrying out a research visit to the UK as part of the collaboration.
UC Irvine’s Earth System Science Department is described as highly interdisciplinary, with broad expertise across the coupled Earth system. The position is embedded in an active international research environment focused on polar climate variability and model-based analysis.

Applicants should have experience analyzing large climate datasets (climate-model output, observations, and/or reanalysis products), proficiency in a scientific programming language such as Python or MATLAB, comfort working in Unix/Linux environments, and a willingness to learn high-performance computing workflows. A record of research productivity, including peer-reviewed publications appropriate to career stage, and strong communication skills with the ability to work both independently and within an international team are required.
How to apply
Apply through the UC Irvine recruitment portal at the posted application link.
