About this position

Penn State University Park is hiring a Postdoctoral Scholar in chemo-mechanical modeling of porous materials. The project focuses on developing novel computational methods for the coupling between chemical reactions, mechanical deformation, and failure in porous media. Applications highlighted in the post include geologic CO2 storage and mineralization, cement and concrete degradation, in-situ hydrogen generation, nuclear waste isolation, geothermal energy extraction, and electrochemical energy storage.

This is a computational position. The scholar will lead model formulation, algorithm development, and software implementation, and will work closely with the PI and graduate students on companion laboratory experiments. There are also opportunities to mentor students, co-lead a conference workshop, and release open-source software and benchmark data.

Eligibility highlights: a PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, geosciences, physics, computer science, or a closely related field by the date of hire; demonstrated experience implementing numerical methods for partial differential equations in research code written by the candidate; and strong interest in coupled multiphysics modeling. Preferred experience includes computational solid and fracture mechanics, phase-field or diffuse-interface methods, reactive transport and flow in porous media, poromechanics, continuum thermodynamics, FVM/FEM/XFEM discretization, MATLAB/C++/Python, and high-performance computing.

Funding: the position is funded for one year from the date of hire, with renewal for a second year anticipated upon satisfactory performance. The expected start date is Spring or Summer 2027 and is negotiable.

How to apply: submit a CV with publications, a statement of research interest and experience, and contact information for three references through Penn State Workday as an external applicant. Current Penn State employees and students must apply internally through Workday. Informal inquiries may be sent to Yashar Mehmani at [email protected], with the subject line beginning “Postdoc 2027 – ” followed by your surname.

Funding details

What's required

A PhD in engineering, applied mathematics, geosciences, physics, computer science, or a closely related field is required by the date of hire. Applicants must have demonstrated experience implementing numerical methods for partial differential equations in research code written by the candidate, not only through commercial finite-element, fluid-dynamics, or multiphysics packages. Preferred experience includes computational solid and fracture mechanics, phase-field or diffuse-interface formulations, reactive transport and flow in porous media, poromechanics and continuum thermodynamics, coupled multiphysics discretization schemes (FVM, FEM, XFEM), scientific programming in MATLAB, C++, or Python, and high-performance computing. Experience bridging modeling and experiments is valued.

How to apply

Prepare a CV with publications, a statement of research interest and experience, and the names and contact information of three references. Submit the application through Penn State Workday as an external applicant; current Penn State employees and students must apply internally through Workday. Informal inquiries may be emailed to Yashar Mehmani with the subject line beginning "Postdoc 2027 – " followed by your surname.
