About this position

The Burghardt Lab in the Plant Science Department at The Pennsylvania State University is seeking a postdoctoral scholar to investigate genome editing and validation of bacterial genes that shape beneficial plant-microbe interactions in agroecosystems.

The project centers on the genetic rewiring of rhizobia–legume interactions to influence competitive fitness inside and outside the host and to support optimal nitrogen fixation. The scholar will identify candidate genes from prior lab experiments, generate modified bacterial strains, and test how these edits affect plant and rhizobial traits. The work also includes analyzing results and communicating findings through publications and conference presentations.

The position sits in a research environment focused on understanding legume-rhizobia interactions in natural and managed landscapes. The successful candidate will join a lab that emphasizes both experimental work and professional development, with mentorship aimed at supporting independent research directions and longer-term career goals.

Funding details

Initially funded for one year from the date of hire, with the option of reappointment for additional years based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds; supported by multi-year grants. Competitive salary based on the NIH postdoc scale plus generous benefits.

What's required

Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in Microbiology, Biology, or a related field before the effective date of hire. The position requires excellent communication skills and experience in modifying and manipulating bacterial genomes, as well as assessing downstream performance effects on both plants and microbes. Preferred qualifications include the ability to conduct lab or greenhouse experiments with plants (Medicago) and rhizobia, experience with genome engineering techniques such as Golden Gate cloning and genome deletion/addition approaches, statistical analysis skills including generalized linear models and multivariate statistics, experience with functional genomics, bacterial genomes, and bacterial tagging methods, evidence of working well both independently and in diverse teams, demonstrated interest in mentoring students, and a track record of first-authored peer-reviewed publications and successful collaborations. A valid driver’s license and successful completion of background checks and a motor vehicle records check are also required.
