About this position
The Ultrasound in Imaging and Therapy (UIT) Lab at The Pennsylvania State University is recruiting a Postdoctoral Scholar in Ultrasound Imaging to join a recently funded five-year multidisciplinary project on advanced ultrasound technologies for quantitative brain imaging and tissue characterization.
Led by Dr. Mohamed Almekkawy in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the project brings together engineering researchers, clinicians, and collaborators at Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The postdoctoral scholar will help develop a dedicated ultrasound platform and contribute to both its technical build-out and its use in translational imaging studies.
The role centers on the design, integration, and validation of an advanced ultrasound system. The scholar will work on hardware and electronics development, system synchronization, high-speed data acquisition, processing of raw RF/channel data, and the creation of research software for quantitative imaging. The project also involves computational imaging and inverse-problem approaches, along with signal-processing and image-reconstruction methods aimed at estimating tissue properties.
Experimental work will span characterization and validation using tissue-mimicking phantoms, ex vivo specimens, and clinical imaging studies under approved research protocols. The position offers an interdisciplinary environment with close collaboration across engineering and medicine, and the opportunity to contribute to emerging ultrasound imaging technologies through publications, presentations, and collaborative research.

What's required
Applicants should hold a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Medical Physics, or a closely related field by the appointment start date. Candidates in the final stages of the Ph.D. who expect to defend soon may apply, provided the Ph.D. is completed before the postdoctoral appointment begins. Preferred qualifications include experience in biomedical ultrasound, particularly computational or quantitative ultrasound; experience with ultrasound computed tomography and deep learning for medical imaging is desirable. Candidates should have strong problem-solving, scientific programming, scientific writing, communication, and teamwork skills.
How to apply
Submit a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, two to three representative peer-reviewed journal publications, and the names and contact information of three professional references through the Workday application process. Current Penn State employees and current Penn State students must apply internally through Workday; external applicants should click Apply and complete the external application. Review begins immediately and continues until the position is filled.
